Motherland

Okonkwo had been sent back to his mother's land. While living there he was spoken to by Uchendu. Uchendu was asking questions and speaking to him the way that Okonkwo has spoken to others. Why is it that when Uchendu gets to speak to him like that and he does not talk back? Do you think Okonkwo would have acted differently if he wasn't in his mother's land?

The reason i believe that Okonkwo does not speak back, is because Okonkwo should show some respect to Uchendu, since afterall, Okonkwo is just using Mbanta as a refuge camp. I also fell that Uchendu has a rigth to speak to Okonkwo the way he is.
If Okonkwo was not in his motherland, then there is certainty that Okonkwo would not allow anyone to speak to him as if he had no title.

I agree with you Karissa. It's not his official land and he is only using them. I think if Okonkwo had spoken back that he would have been kicked out.

I agree with both of the comments, I think that Okonkwo chose not to talk back because he has no power in his motherland. He knows that if he disobeys an order or chooses to rebel against Uchendu or someone else the consequences will be high. Also if he gets kicked out of his motherland he will have nowhere to go. If Okonkwo was in Umofia, where he had more power, he wouldnt allow anybody to talk to him the way Uchendu did.

I agree with all of you.

I would like to also point out that Uchendu is Okonkwo's uncle. Because he is in his motherland, and Uchendu is his mother's brother, I feel that he almost had no choice but to listen to this man.

Also, Uchendu tells him about his own suffering (five out of six of his wives and 22 children are dead). I feel that because of sharing this, Okonkwo was able to relate more to Uchendu. Perhaps, he even wanted to listen to him because he could learn how to deal with his losses from Uchendu who has quite the experience.

However, Alyssa, I don't think he would have been kicked out of his motherland had he talked back. Mbanta is a very peaceful place. When the Westerners came in, the people did not agree with what they tried to convince them, but they did not kick them out.

I believe he would not have acted differently in his fatherland. Even Okonkwo knew when to talk back. Uchendu is a leader of his tribe and also and elder. Okonkwo needs to show him respect. Even in Umofia he would show the elders respect even if he disagreed with them.

Okonkwo knew he was not in his place to talk back. He had just been exiled from his father land and was taken in by the tribe on his motherland. They did not have to take him in, they could of seen how he was exiled for a women crime. The bottom line is that he was in no place to talk back.

Okonkwo doesn't talk back to Uchendu because he is not a man of title and does not have the priviledge. If he was in his own village it would have gone differently.
